With a rich history of commerce, these colorful characters wandered up and down the beaches of South Carolina for wealth and snatching the perfect place to hide their booty. There was no lack of hiding places, with inlets of the coast, inland rivers and swamps - who knows how many Dead Man Trunks, are still being discovered. The pirates who plundered the South Carolina surf was as varied as the treasures they stole. Here is a brief history of miscreants who preyed on the banks of the Carolinas.
John Rackham aka "Calico Jack" - Anne Bonny - Mary Read
Nicknamed after the Indian cloth that he used often, Calico was a pirate who paid his dues by quartermastering other ships until he won his own vessel. Calico was a terror to Jamaica. Bartholomew Roberts aka Black Bart "
Black Bart was a sailor from an early age and after a ship where he was a fellow was captured by pirates, he decided to join them. Rising quickly through the ranks, Bart became a privateer unrivaled. Accumulating 51 million pounds of treasure on his career - his skill as a navigator and an intimidator were unprecedented. Spanish trade routes to the Carolinas had to be adjusted to avoid Roberts.
Perhaps it was their greed that ended the Black Bart area, leaving the Carolinas to plunder the African coast, Bart was deceived by Royal Navy and killed by cannon fire. He was so loved by his team who shot the sea to allow their dead bodies to escape arrest.
Stede Bonnet also known as "The Gentleman Pirate"
He said he had become a pirate to get away from his nagging wife. Being from a wealthy family, Bonnet was a pirate inexperienced, but has made several successful raids on merchant ships, while maintaining their way of its creation penalty which earned him the name of "The Gentleman Pirate." He controlled mainly off the coast of Carolina, but perhaps his claim to infamy was his rivalry with Blackbeard.
The pirate Blackbeard friendship with people and even brought Bonnet on board his own ship long enough for the crew to steal Blackbeard's Bonnet blind. After Shave Bonnet left with an empty vessel, he vowed revenge on Blackbeard, but military vessels from South Carolina started with him first and Bonnet was tried and hanged in Charleston. His body was left hanging in the White Point for four days as an example of what happens with pirates off the coast of Carolina.
Also known as Edward Teach "Blackbeard"
Starting as a merchant sea, are taught a privateer during Queen Anne War. Blackbeard's long-term ended when he was ambushed by a small navy ship lead by Lieutenant Maynard of Virginia, at anchor in a bay in North Carolina. The two crews involved in hand-to-hand fighting and Blackbeard was stabbed about 25 times and fired at least 5 times. He was beheaded and his head hung Maynard's bow as a trophy. Members of both teams have said that once Blackbeard's headless body was thrown into the sea he swam around the ship 3 times before finally sinking into the abyss.
Believe it or not, the legends, the pirates who plundered the coast of the Carolinas were real. So do your homework, roll out the map and get your metal detectors. Because who knows what you can find when you leave the tales take you on an adventure of their own group.
