One of the great things about living in California, Southern California, especially, is that you are so close to Mexico you can drive over a day trip any of its border towns and drive back the same day! (Okay, so it does not work so well when you're near Washington. California is a big state, and we're talking in generalities here. Just go with it for a minute.) A head is, you are virtually guaranteed a fantastic day of fun in the sun.

The downside? You can not have your car insurance california with you.

With people expect to have to change their choice of car insurance when they move to another State or to jump the border into Canada or Mexico, for an extended stay. What they usually do not realize is that your insurance policy that will leave them unprotected just to take an afternoon to go shopping in Tijuana!

The catch, while your California auto insurance company probably fortunately cover you while you are in Mexico, the residents do not have them. Your insurance is not good in most auto repair shops south of the border, which can be bad news if you hit your car and even worse news if you can complete another person! This type of damage can be very expensive, very fast.

And then there's the small matter of the ticket and possible prison sentence to be treated from the local law enforcement for driving without insurance. Yes, Mexico is more difficult to drive without insurance in the United States. What is worse, there is a reason that arrests Tijuana have the reputation they do. Many Mexican officials have a tendency to find Americans guilty until proven innocent rather than vice versa. This can get very nasty, very quickly when you're talking about a prison sentence for driving without insurance.

You really do not want to go there.

Fortunately, picking up a policy of automobile insurance in Mexico to cover it for the duration of their Mexican holiday is much easier than you think. There are many, many companies that work with insurance carriers across the border to provide the short-term policies from one day to six months for American tourists traveling to the country. Your California auto insurance agent should be able to refer you to a trust that will set you up with a good policy without charging you an arm and a leg to find it first!

If you are unsure if the company is working with you is legal or not, check your record with the BBB (as most of these organizations are based Americans have to be there somewhere) and make sure the policy is trying to sell you meet the requirements of Mexico. Mexico requires all drivers to be insured up to $ 20,000 per incident, which is not much in the grand scheme of things, however, to be on the safer side Californians choose to go with a minimum of $ 50,000 or more to make sure your holiday is not ruined by finding that they are underinsured when disaster strikes. (This is where most of the reputable dealers insurance will start out.)

Mexico is a great place to visit, and while you are conscious about making sure your car insurance is on the line every time you go you should be able to have a wonderful, worry-free time, enjoying the sights and sounds life south of the border .
